Working with the Grav CMS

In a previous blog post we highlighted the Grav CMS, this is a CMS that sets itself apart by using a flat file structure. There are more and more Content Management Systems that do it this way instead of with a database. We see and hear from our customers that this Content Management System is becoming more and more popular and a lot of people are switching from WordPress to work with Grav CMS for their hosting.

Once you get through the easy installation of Grav CMS and want to get your site up and running then you can start with the following items.

Set up SMTP authentication.

At MijnHostingPartner.nl we require that you use SMTP authentication when sending email within your hosting. This is to ensure that no abuse can be made of it. The settings can be entered in the following way under configuration:

Backup rights

Grav CMS needs extra rights to create a backup directly from the admin panel. The read permissions are set on the root folder of the domain name. After this the backups can be made. So you do not need to take any complicated steps to make a backup of your entire website.

Installing themes and plugins

To extend and customize your Grav CMS website, you can use plugins and themes. We recommend to only use the official website of Grav CMS. This is to make sure you don’t get any unreliable plugins or leaky themes. The official download page can be found here:

https://getgrav.org/downloads

Every theme or plugin comes with a readme.md that contains all the necessary information. It comes down to putting a theme or plugin under user/themes or user/plugins after you have unpacked them. The easiest way to do this is with an FTP program like FileZilla. This way you can easily upload the files to your hosting.

At the time of writing you have 91 themes to choose from for free. 241 plugins that you can use ranging from frameworks to an SEO or mimify plugin. And finally 43 skeletons that you can use. Skeletons are packaged Grav CMS installations that you can use to start up very quickly. They often already include the necessary or useful plugins or themes.
