Is the NL domain name already taken?

If you’re looking for a new domain name for your project, it’s becoming increasingly common to find that the domain name you want has already been registered by someone else. Does that mean it’s time to give up? In this blog post, we’ll show you all your options.

The digital world is simply getting more crowded. With millions of registered .nl domain names, the chances are high that your first choice has already been registered by someone else. This forces entrepreneurs and website operators to think outside the box. In this article, we’ll show you how to cleverly navigate this digital scarcity, which alternatives actually work, and which pitfalls you should absolutely avoid to prevent trademark issues.

Check alternative domain extensions

At MijnHostingPartner.nl, you can register a wide selection of domain extensions. As soon as you enter the domain name into the domain configurator, all available extensions will be displayed immediately. Those still available can be ordered immediately. If it says “Transfer” there, this domain name is already taken and can only be transferred if you own this domain name and can obtain a transfer code for it.

If the “Order” option is displayed (highlighted in green), the domain name is still available and you can proceed with the order. The current status of the domain names is checked in real time. Unfortunately, errors can occur during this process. No further rights can be granted here. Should this check fail unexpectedly, you will of course receive a refund of the purchase amount. Or we can offer to register an alternative domain name for you.

However, caution is advised

Although in most cases you can easily find an alternative domain extension that is still available, it is not always a good idea to actually register it. You can easily receive a warning for misuse and often step on other parties’ toes. Suppose you find a domain extension belonging to a local company operating in the same industry as you and register that domain.

For example, loodgieter-utrecht.co.uk (the extension for England).

Not only does this look strange, but it also completely fails to meet the expectations of Google, your visitors, and other organizations. It looks like SPAM and suggests misuse.

So think carefully about whether you’ll benefit from this or if it will mainly just cause you and others headaches. “Honesty is the best policy” is a saying that applies here as well.

Don’t use these tactics

Using too many hyphens: your-brand-name-utrecht-service.nl. This comes across as unreliable to visitors and is often viewed as spam by search engines.

Intentional misspellings (typosquatting): Registering a name that resembles the original (e.g., boll.com instead of bol.com) to profit from the original’s success. This is guaranteed to lead to legal claims.

Adding numbers without logic: beautysalon12.nl, because beautysalon.nl is already taken. This sounds unprofessional unless the number has a clear meaning (such as an area code or the year the business was founded).

Buying the domain name

Is the desired .nl domain already taken, but there’s no active website on it? Then you can try to buy the domain name. Tip: Check the WHOIS data (or SIDN for .nl domains) to see if you can find the owner’s contact information or if there’s a “For Sale” page. Sometimes you can still acquire the name for a small fee. However, people often know the value of what they have and demand fairly high prices for it if it’s a sought-after domain name.

If the domain name is already taken and the owner can’t be found or isn’t interested in selling, it’s advisable to accept the loss and come up with a new domain name. You can mark the domain name’s expiration date on your calendar; there’s still a small chance it won’t be renewed and can be registered afterward.

Stuck?

Coming up with the perfect domain name can be difficult, but think of it as a chance to get creative! Do you have a shortlist of alternatives? Enter them directly into our domain name configurator to see which ones are still available. Good luck!
