What is the click-through rate, and how can it be improved?
There are a number of situations where click-through rate (CTR) plays a role, such as in ads you create on social media, but also in organic search results and in the field of AI. In this blog post, we’ll take a closer look at what exactly lies behind it and how you can optimize it to achieve the best results—whether in a social media post or on a new landing page on your website.
Why Every Percentage Point Counts
The click-through rate is the percentage of people who click on your link or ad. This percentage is calculated and determined based on the number of impressions. In other words: How many people saw your link or ad, and how many actually clicked on it? On social media, this can often be made visually appealing, for example by adding engaging and interesting photos or graphics. Or through catchy titles and short descriptions.
With a standard listing consisting of just a link and text—such as in Google’s organic search results—this is often an even greater challenge. Here, you’re limited to the page title, the domain name, and a brief description of often only ~140 characters.
The reason why this matters is actually quite simple: you get more out of your results, and often at a lower cost. Suppose your ad or search result is displayed 1,000 times, but only a few users ultimately click on your ad. Then that’s often a lot of effort for little return. If you achieve a higher click-through rate with 1,000 impressions—for example, 100 clicks—then you’re getting many times more out of it.
How to Increase Your Click-Through Rate on Google
In natural (organic) search results, you have fewer visual tools at your disposal than on social media, but that doesn’t mean you’re powerless. Here are three proven methods to get more clicks from Google:
1. Use “Rich Snippets” and Schema Markup
Did you know that you can add additional information to your Google listing? By using Schema Markup (structured data), you can add things like:
• Rating stars: Users are more likely to click on a result with gold stars.
• Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ): You literally take up more space on the page, pushing competitors further down.
• Price information or inventory: Immediate clarity for the searcher.
2. The Psychology of the Title: The “Curiosity Gap”
Your page title is your calling card. Instead of a boring title like “Tips for CTR,” you should choose something that piques curiosity or offers a clear benefit:
• Use numbers: “5 Proven Techniques to Double Your CTR” works better than “Improve CTR.”
• Play on emotions: Use words like “secret,” “mistake,” or “immediately.”
• Ask a question: “Why is no one clicking on your website? Here’s how to fix it.”
Measurement is knowledge: Use Google Search Console
You don’t have to guess whether your adjustments are working. Google Search Console is every website owner’s best friend. We recommend installing it for nearly every website. In this free tool, you can see exactly in the overview:
Which pages have many impressions (people are seeing them).
But have a low CTR (people aren’t clicking through).
Pro tip: Look for pages that rank in positions 1 through 5 but have a CTR of less than 3%. These are your “low-hanging fruits.” Adjust the title and meta description here and check after two weeks to see if the percentage increases.
Social Media
Increasing CTR on social media can be a challenge, but it often depends on the visual aspect. Of course, this depends on which platform you use. You should experiment here to find out what works best for your target audience. For example, by adding text or elements to your images. Or, conversely, by omitting visual elements. There are many possibilities here, so it’s advisable to take some time to experiment and see what works best.
The same applies here: measurement is knowledge, and in addition to Google Search Console, Google Analytics is a valuable tool for seeing which of these experiments had the greatest impact.
