How can I secure my website properly?

In our previous blog post, we went through how to maintain your website.Maintenance also contributes to the security of your website, after all, you don't want your website to be abused.

For this reason we decided to make a follow-up blog post of this topic. In this blog post we will talk about how you can make your website a lot safer.

Hide your admin page

For WordPress hosting, this is an excellent option because you can find out the admin page very easily. You can reach the WordPress admin page on almost any website by typing /wp-admin after it.

Fortunately, with several plug-ins it is possible to hide this admin page. This can ensure that there are far fewer attempts to log in.

It is also advisable to always use a different username than admin. This is because admin is the default username in WordPress and therefore very easy to guess.

It is also possible to use a 2fa authentication, this will send an extra message to your phone to confirm that this is you.

Set a strong password

This is probably one of the most important things you can do to secure your website. If you have a strong password it is also a lot harder for malicious people to get in.

You can of course set a password yourself but you get a stronger password with a random password generator. So you almost always have a guarantee of a strong password which is virtually impossible to guess.

Strong passwords do not consist of everyday words or for example your birthday. If you want a really strong password you use large and small letters, numbers and special characters mixed together.

Keep everything up to date

We discussed this in our previous blog post but we can't say it often enough. It is important to keep everything as up to date as possible as this can cause potential security leaks.

This applies to both your website itself but also to the associated plugins and themes. If everything is properly updated, the risk of your website being abused is much smaller.

Also, making backups is always important, it can still go wrong for whatever reason.

If you have any questions about this, you can always see if there is a chat employee present. If no one is available you can send a ticket to our helpdesk.
