Dutch companies targeted by phishing

Research by SIDN shows that more than half of Dutch companies (58%) were the target of phishing attacks last year. Nevertheless, many companies still take too few measures to protect themselves. Only a small proportion have fully implemented the most important email standards such as SPF, DKIM and DMARC. Yet these are precisely the means to prevent the misuse of domain names.

Fortunately, we at MijnHostingPartner.nl make this much easier: we set up most of the important DNS records for you by default.

Why are email standards so important?

Email is one of the oldest internet protocols and was not originally developed with security in mind. Therefore, malicious parties can easily spoof the sender address, making a phishing email appear to come from a trusted domain. Nevertheless, email is still one of the most popular means of communication, both for private and business purposes. And everyone has an email address.

Additional DNS records that you can add to your own domain name for your business will allow your company to communicate more securely and prevent a lot of phishing.

Standards such as:

- SPF - checks whether the sender is authorized to send emails on behalf of your domain.

- DKIM - adds a digital signature so that the recipient can verify that a message has not been altered.

- DMARC - determines what to do if an email does not pass the SPF or DKIM check. By default, this is set to Quarantine at MijnHostingPartner.nl.

The only standard that we do not create automatically is BIMI (Brand Indicators for Message Identification). This allows you to make your company logo visible to recipients in their inbox. Unfortunately, in many cases the BIMI dataset is not sufficient to actually show the image to recipients and you will need to obtain and go through a Verification Mark Certificate (VMC) to do so. To get this process started, there are also a few steps that need to be completed and you can request this by creating a ticket with the helpdesk. We will then prepare the order for you and guide you through the process.
