Hosting jargon explained

If you are a layman, you may well hear a few difficult words about the helpdesk.Often this is jargon or, in other words, technical language.

Because many of these terms can be quite complicated we are going to cover them in this blog post.In this blog post we are going to go through what the most important terms in the hosting world are.

CMS

Perhaps one of the most common terms you will hear is the word CMS.This stands for Content Management System and is a system that allows you to manage your website.Think for example of WordPress.

In this system you have the possibility to set up entire web pages in a few seconds without having to do any coding yourself. All you have to do is choose a matching theme and you can set up your website in no time.

Besides that, you also have extensive opportunities to install plug-ins so you can build your website according to your own wishes. It is often important that you keep the updates of your system.

This is because there are often leaks found in the CMS that are closed in updates, so it is for your own safety. It is also possible to have this done automatically through Managed WordPress Hosting, so you don't have to do anything else.

TLD & Subdomains

You always have 2 different types of domains on your hosting.TLD stands for top level domains and this is your main domain which you also need to purchase.

You can also add a subdomain to your main domain, for example: shop.DomeinNaam.nl.Another example is our webmail or control panel, which are accessible via subdomains.

This is called a subdomain and is a domain that you can consider as an addition to your main domain.Fortunately there are no additional costs involved and you can create as many subdomains as you want.

web.config

It may be that you are only familiar with the file called htacces, this is mainly run on Linux systems. On Windows systems you have another file for this called web.config.

You can do the same as on htacces files however it should be deployed differently. When you use Umbraco hosting for example, you must use a web.config file.

This is actually a configuration file with which you can set all kinds of things such as a redirect to https.

FTP

An FTP connection is not the most important thing you need but it can make many things a lot easier.FTP stands for File Transfer Protocol and can be used to transfer files.

What you actually do with this is move the file from one computer to another computer. You can also use this to quickly access your files.A commonly used program to make this work is FileZilla this is also the program we recommend for this.

SSL

Online security is something that is becoming increasingly important. This applies not only to yourself but also to the visitors of your website.

The best way to have your visitors on a secure connection on your website is through an https connection. You can do this if you use an SSL certificate. This way you can let the visitors visit your website over a secure connection.

If you have a subdomain you will also notice that there is a lock in the search bar of your browser. This shows that you are on a website with a secure connection.

You will also notice that your connection is not over http but over https. For an own webshop it is even mandatory to use this, fake webshops often do not have an SSL certificate.

Please note that it is possible that they still have an SSL certificate, this will then be the let's encrypt certificate. This is a free certificate with no further checks so anyone can install it.

DNS records

In our previous blog post we explained different DNS records.DNS records are comparable to traffic controllers because they make sure that your visitors are directed to your website.

A records are the IP addresses of your website and they make sure that you are directed to the right place on the server.Changes to a DNS record will also always take a while to be fully processed, this is called the DNS refresh.

If you have any questions you can always see if there is a chat employee present. If no one is available you can create a ticket using our ticket system.Contact via Facebook or Twitter is also possible.
