Domain name registry gives misleading offers

If you are starting a business you might have already considered getting a domain name for your website. You will then also need your own hosting to run your website on.

However, it is first important that you register a domain name and you should beware of scams.Scams involving domain names are becoming increasingly common nowadays.

Yesterday, the SIDN published a Tweet saying that there is a so-called company called domainregister.com.This company will approach you via email with the text that someone is about to register a similar domain name.

What exactly is happening?

The company that will supposedly call you on the phone hereby indicates that someone is about to register a domain that is very similar to yours. They say that they are giving you the opportunity to register the domain so that it will not be registered by someone else.

They also state that if you do not do this, it could have serious consequences for your company.According to them, it could lead to confusion in the Google search results or even damage to your image.

They offer the domain for 29.95 per year and they say they will register it for 10 years. This means that in total you would have to pay 299.50 to this party.

They also say that the domain has to be registered for at least 1 year and that after that you can get your money back if you want.If you agree to this then you will notice that it is actually already too late.
After one year you will not have the opportunity to ask for your money back.So if you are approached by this company or a similar company it is best to hang up immediately.

Domain name check

If you do not want to register a similar domain name you should check it yourself.Fortunately, there are several ways to check whether a domain name has already been registered.

For example, most hosting companies have this built in to their website. If you check the domain name with the corresponding extension you will see that it is almost always still available.

If you wish you can now register this domain name yourself so that for the time being no abuse can be made of it.Should you receive a call from someone offering this service, it's best to write down the number and report it to Fraud Helpdesk.

If you have any further questions on this subject, you can always check to see if there is a chat employee present. If there is no one on the chat then it is best to create a ticket to our helpdesk.
