What you should pay attention to when updating PHP
Before you update PHP for your website, you should check a number of things. Especially if your website is a little older, as an uncontrolled update could result in a white screen. Among other things, check the following things on your website before you update it.
Always create a backup of your website and database first.
1. check whether your CMS supports the new PHP version
- Check the release notes of your CMS (e.g. WordPress, Joomla or Drupal) to see if PHP 8.4 is officially supported.
- First update the CMS itself to the latest stable version.
- Old CMS versions may use features that have been removed or changed in PHP 8.4.
2. check and update all plugins and extensions
- Go to the overview of plugins or modules in your CMS.
- Update all plugins to the latest version.
- Check the plugin manufacturer's website for compatibility with PHP 8.4.
- Deactivate or remove outdated or unmaintained plugins (these are often a source of errors).
3. check your theme or template
- Update your theme to the latest version.
- If you are using a custom theme, check the code for outdated PHP functions (such as create_function() or ereg_replace() - these are long outdated).
- Also check that the theme is compatible with the latest version of your CMS.
